DANIELSON, Conn. -- Connecticut State Police arrested a mother after her 2-year-old child fell from a second-story ledge, onto a metal canopy, and into the arms of an onlooker.

Police began receiving several 911 calls shortly after 8:30 a.m. Sunday reporting a small boy was crawling on the second-story ledge outside his apartment window.

The apartment building is located at 87 Main St. in the town of Danielson next to the Danielson Bookstore.

The 911 callers reported that the child was approximately 20 feet above ground when he lost his balance and fell onto a metal canopy above the bookstore. From the canopy, the child fell toward the ground but was caught by an onlooker rushing to help.

Police said Jeoffrey Leonard, 51, of Killingly, caught the child before he hit the ground. The child was uninjured, police said.

The child's mother was asleep in the apartment when he fell from the ledge, investigators said.

The mother was taken into custody, charged with risk of injury to a minor and was released on $5,000 bond.
